Anatomy of a Painting “The Rock”

Painting in one of my favorite places in the Catoctin Mountains in Thurmont Maryland.  There are endless possiblities contrasting the gorgeous rocks, trees and the ever present stream.  I love painting next to streams listening to the sounds and watching the constantly changing patterns of water and light.   I think it is important to know what you want to “say” in your painting and say it clearly. In this painting it was very clear what was the central theme.  It was the large rock.  I wanted to place it squarely in the middle and see if I could make it work.  I think the composition does work.

The scene. A lovely stream surrounded by rocks and variety of trees
