Walking along the canal there are many opportunities to see wildlife. Starting at Lock 7 we made our way along the canal path.

There are several paths through the woods which lead down to the Potomac river.

“Many families lived in Lockhouse 6. It is interesting to note that this lockkeeper was a woman by the name of Martha King. She worked on the canal for 30 years and continued to live in the lockhouse after the National Park Service took over the canal in 1938.Jul 18, 2014.

Lock #7 is a very charming place. The grass is a little unruly which I prefer. The lockhouse is nestled under a large tree and right next to the lock. I started an underpainting in burnt sienna using a sketch and a photo as a reference. The first day painting on site I already had my composition set but then the challenge of making the local color and my drawing work together begins.

I will be returning to Lock 7 to work on site. Will continue this later……..
